Ben Horowitz, a varsity-league entrepreneur who is now an equally successful venture capitalist and author, reports that, “As a startup CEO, I slept like a baby. I woke up every two hours and cried.”
Having co-founded and run four businesses, I can relate. One company that I co-founded made it to a successful acquisition, one didn’t make it at all, one is continuing to progress after more than a decade and for one it’s still too early to tell. I’ve seen a mix of scenarios and can report that each is equally daunting.
Over the years I’ve found a few ways to maintain perspective and keep my sanity.
Don’t attempt this alone: I need to know that I can share the ups and downs with someone who’s got my back no matter what. Whether it’s been my mother or my girlfriend, I’ve always had someone on the outside of the action who’s smart, willing to listen to my whining and able to weigh in from time to time with reasonably balanced advice…….
